unique voice, style, and personality. She has a vocal style that
amazes, intimate passionate expression that moves, and soaring vocals
that transport you back to when these songs were written. "Latinas"
premiered to critical acclaim at San Francisco's elegant Plush Room
cabaret. Juanita will interpret, in addition to her own compositions,
songs from composers Maria Grever, Consuelo Velásquez and
Emma Elena Valdelamar from México; Chabuca Granda from Perú;
Isolina Carrillo from Cuba; Violeta Parra from Chile; and a song
about the poet Alfonsina Storni from Argentina.
Raised in Panama and Mexico, having studied music and trained as
an opera and a classical pianist-she graduated from Yale University,
UC Berkeley, and the Nice Conservatory in France-Juanita has combined
her love for Latin American music with her classical training and
musical gifts to develop her unique singing style. She has delighted
audiences in Madrid, Mexico City, Peru, Italy and the USA, and now
she will share some of her knowledge in a "Vocal Power"
workshop she will give also at La Raza Center, on the same Saturday
at 10 am, for teachers, singers, aspiring singers and any level
speaker interested in learning more about vocal health, production
and career longevity with extended vocal use.
